Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.
- Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.
- Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success.
- Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats.
- Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.
Reflection
Standard III emphasizes the importance of staying updated with technology trends and innovations. Teachers must learn about new technologies and actively seek to integrate them into instruction. Students are becoming more digitally affluent, so teachers have a responsibility to not only be as tech-savvy, but to be leaders in the digital society. The artifacts below demonstrate that I have met this standard. Click on the images to fully access each.
Artifact 1: Instructional Technology Tutorial
In IT648, I created a tutorial website for Appear.in, an online video collaboration tool. The assignment required us to investigate new technologies and select one for further research. I chose Appear.in, a tool developed in Norway in 2013. Through the tutorial, I showcase an innovative digital tool, teach others how to use it, and discuss possible instructional strategies. The tutorial I developed is an excellent example of modeling digital-age work and learning. Since IT648, I have used Appear.in regularly to collaborate on both work tasks and school projects. Artifact 2: Group Communications Project While researching digital communication tools in IT648, students were put into groups to discuss findings, test the tools together, and prepare a collaborative paper. Each of my six group members chose digital tools and then we met virtually using each. This artifact meets every aspect of Standard III. I learned several new technologies, collaborated with peers to evaluate and analyze each, and communicated relevant information and ideas through the group paper. Artifact 3: Collaborative Learning Activity In IT610, I created a collaborative assignment for students in my online course. I set up a digital “board” about Universal Design for Learning using RealtimeBoard where students could contribute ideas and resources using digital sticky notes. I created instructions and modeled proper use by adding a few sticky notes of my own. This project encouraged collaboration and provided a digital platform for group brainstorming. |

Future Learning Goals
To continue to meet this Standard in the future, I will have to strive to stay updated with current trends in instructional technology. Modeling digital age work and learning can only occur after time spent in research and planning. It is my goal to continue learning as a professional in a digital society by making the necessary time for research. Just as I did with Appear.in, I plan to apply my knowledge of digital tools in future learning environments.
