Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the Standards.
- Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.
- Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.
- Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.
- Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.
Reflection
Standard II emphasizes the need to thoughtfully plan digital content in online learning. It is easy for teachers to implement cookie-cutter lessons by assigning the same reading, writing, and assessment activities. This standard challenges educators to use digital tools to make learning a customized and interactive journey. The artifacts below demonstrate that I have met this standard. Artifact 1: Podcast Lesson
One of the assignments in my Greek Mythology course involved creating a podcast. I shared the story of Hades and Persephone and enhanced the audio with fun sound effects. This was one of my favorite projects because I have always been an auditory learner. Teaching in ways that address alternative learning styles is easier than ever before through digital tools. Podcasts are great to use in online learning environments as creative substitutes (or additions) to reading content. Artifact 2: Interactive Learning Activity Explaining any complex topic can be challenging for teachers. Students often lose interest and struggle to pay attention. Explaining each of the different characters in mythology would take hours of lectures, so instead, I created an interactive multimedia graphic with ThingLink for students to explore. Students could see an image of the characters together and then select specific images to open additional resources on each. ThingLink is a great tool for encouraging students to pursue individual curiosities. Artifact 3: Varied Course Assessments Part of this Standard is about creating alternative assessments that allow students to demonstrate learning competencies in creative ways. In IT650, I developed an online course with various types of formative and summative assessments. Students were required to write short essays, interact in a discussion forum, take quizzes, and choose from different methods of final projects. By using various assessment methods and allowing students to personalize their learning activities, I maximized content learning. Future Learning Goals
These projects have taught me that designing engaging lessons, activities, and assessments is a key factor in student engagement and success. There is truly no excuse for boring online learning environments. I plan to use the tools I have learned about to enrich lessons in the future. I also intend to incorporate varied and alternative assessment methods in future content to promote student individuality and expression.
